The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly is still looking at ways to fund its $83 million budget. The assembly approved the spending plan earlier this spring, but failed to pass new revenue measures to fill a $4.1 million budget gap.  Borough Mayor Mike Navarre wants to put an 8 percent bed-tax proposal on the ballot this October to backfill the revenue shortage.  

Nanwalek School Converts Garage to Classroom

Nanwalek School is getting some relief from overcrowding after a garage/shop area was converted into a new classroom over the summer.

Principal Nancy Kleine says the new classroom for sixth through 12th-graders has made students more comfortable and enthusiastic about learning.

Shining Sendoff for Environmental Educator

A generation of Kenai Peninsula students know a little more about their environment and the importance of keeping it healthy, thanks to one man. Dan Pascucci was honored earlier this summer in Soldotna.

In his 15 years as an environmental educator on the Kenai Peninsula, Dan Pascucci taught kids and adults many important things about the local ecosystem. But the one thing he will most likely be remembered for is that sea stars are not fish.
