The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are celebrating Veterans Day with their annual parade on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 2015.

Don Ridle is Commander of American Legion Post 16 in Homer. Ridle says the plan for this year’s parade is almost exactly the same as years past. It starts on Pioneer Avenue.

“And then it goes to Islands and Ocean and there’s a ceremony performed by the American Legion and also the VFW from Anchor Point,” said Ridle.

After the parade the Homer Elks Lodge will serve lunch to the veterans. Next members of the American Legion and VFW will visit with elderly veterans in South Peninsula Hospital’s Long-term Care facility.

“What we do is we visit the old vets who are confined to the hospital and they enjoy this a lot. We did it last year for the first time and it worked so good last year we decided to [make] it an annual thing,” said Ridle.

After the visit to the hospital the vets will return to the Elks Lodge and continue celebrating the day.

“It’s just a good way for all the veterans to get together once a year and even the homeless ones will come out and that’s good to see,” said Ridle.

Ridle asks the Homer community not to forget to thank their veterans.

“Nothing’s free and we fought for the freedom of the United States and we’re very proud of it,” said Ridle.

The parade starts at 11 am sharp.
