Rotarty Health Fair kicks off Saturday

Aaron Bolton, KBBI News

The thirty-fourth annual Rotary Health Fair will kick off Saturday morning. Over 70 booths will crowd the Homer High School commons and gymnasium.

Derotha Ferraro is the South Peninsula Hospital communications director. The hospital partners with the Rotary to provide discounted blood panels in the weeks leading up to the event.

The hospital has performed over 600 blood panels so far and there will still be some availability during the fair.

Ferraro said attendees can use those panels to visit with various providers Saturday.

“There will be professionals from the health care community at your service for free to open the envelope with you, look your blood results, give you some tips, maybe make a little plan,” she said.

The fair will also offer several other screenings for vision, legs and other services.

Among new offerings, Ferraro said the fair will provide classes for the first time in 10 years. A variety of classes on opioids and addiction will run on the hour from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Ferraro said the classes were chosen because of the ongoing conversation about addition in the community.

“More and more people are really wanting to do something about the opioid crisis and don’t necessarily know how to,” she explained. “Just learning about that is something people can do to help make a difference because they are responding and reacting in a different way.”

The fair will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the afternoon.

Aaron Bolton has moved on to a new position in Montana; he is no longer KBBI News Director. KBBI is currently seeking a News Director, and Kathleen Gustafson is filling in for the time being.
