New Pharmacy to Offer Compounding

Homer has a new pharmacy. Scotts Family Pharmacy opened in October. The new pharmacy will soon have a drive-through and offer compounding, both firsts for the community.

Dr. Nathan Scott and his wife Gina Scott are co-owners of Scott’s Family Pharmacy. They say although there are two existing pharmacies in Homer, this new  one will offer services and products you can’t find here. Doctor Scott says his vision for the pharmacy is to make it a one-stop-shop.

“We want to be creating an atmosphere where people can come in and not only just get their prescriptions filled, but also if they’re more into the natural aspect of healing," said Scott.

"So natural products, some homeopathic products, crutches and diabetic supplies, things like that. We’d like to be able to offer everything all in one place.”

Doctor Scott studied pharmacy at Utah State University. He finished his degree at the University of Southern Nevada. After graduation, he was a clinical pharmacist in a hospital for more than six years.

The Scotts moved from Utah to Homer about a year ago with the goal of opening a  pharmacy. After working other jobs for a while, they decided the time was right.

Mrs. Scott is a pharmacy technician. She also runs the business side of things. She says it’s not easy to get a pharmacy off the ground.

“We knew it was going to be hard, but it’s proven to be much, much more work," Scott laughs. "In a good way. It’s a hard, stressful thing but it’s been a good experience.”

The pharmacy will soon have a drive through and plans to offer compounding services. Compounding is the process of creating medicine from scratch. That means people can have medication tailored to their needs. Customers can receive their medicine in a personalized dose or inside something like a lollypop or a lozenge. People who need compounding services currently have to take their business to Soldotna or Anchorage, with many ordering from out of state for their particular needs.

The Scott Family plans to give those people a local option.

“I think people are excited to see another locally owned business coming in, and they can come and talk to us and know that we’re going to carry the things that the community really wants, and really needs," Dr. Scott said.

"You know, just having that reciprocity between us and the community is going to be a strong thing for us.”

Scotts Family Pharmacy opened their doors October 6. The business is located at the corner of Lake Street and Pioneer Avenue. You can learn more on their Facebook page.
