Homer Cleans Up This Weekend

Saturday, May 7 is Clean-up Day in Homer.

“People are cleaning up all week now, but the actual delivery is on Saturday to the Chamber parking lot between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m,” said Jan Knutson, Visitor and Special Events Manager at Homer Chamber of Commerce. She says the Chamber has hosted the clean-up event for more than 30 years.

“In the Chamber parking lot we’ll have a major big dumpster, we’ll have recycling bins, we’ll have donations to the food bank when people are cleaning out their freezers and we’ll take it straight to the food bank. And then there also will be spruce up projects around the city,” said Knutson.

Knutson says the food clean out and service project activities are new this year.

"There are two new things that we’ve added this year is the cleaning out of your freezers of surplus meat and moose and fish and chicken and then dried non-perishable items to deliver to the food bank. And then the spruce up is also new. We’re working with businesses along Pioneer Square, the senior center to match high school, college and then other volunteers with volunteer projects,” said Knutson.

Adults interested in signing up for ‘spruce up’ projects at Homer Senior Citizens Center and South Peninsula Hospital can call the Chamber. Businesses can request bags for cleanup this week and volunteers will pick them up, curbside on Saturday. Recycling should be bagged separately. They will be accepting glass aluminum and tin cans, newspapers, corrugated cardboard, mixed paper and #1, #2 and #5 plastic. Knutson says there will also be food and prizes.

“The Lions will be cooking hotdogs here at the Chamber. Rotary has always been very involved to count the number of bags that are brought in so that prizes can be given for families, individuals, groups that are bringing in the number of bags, as well as children’s prizes,” said Knutson.

Trash bags are available now at Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, Homer High School, Safeway, Save U More, Ulmer’s and Fritz Creek General Store.
