This is a beginner’s class and introduction to the general knowledge and skills required for beekeeping in Alaska. This class will go over all the required woodenware that makes up the hive, as well as the needed tools and equipment. It will cover both the costs and time commitment associated with keeping bees. Additional topics to be covered include: the different types of pollen bees; the makeup of the hive, such as the life span of a worker bee, the drones and the queen; instructions on how to hive and feed the package bees in the spring; and how to prevent a swarm. This is a comprehensive class that will give the students the confidence they need to go forward with keeping honeybees in Alaska.
