Pier One Theatre presents an Amateur production of Jesus Christ Superstar with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This rock opera borrows from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and follows Jesus during the last seven days of his life. The show was originally produced in 1970 as a concept album before it was staged in 1971. The brilliant Rock’n’Roll score highlights the musical styles which were popular in the era. This production, directed by Lance Petersen, Jennifer Norton and Mark Robinson, with choreography by Lynne Roff, imagines a modern “Jerusalem,” a gritty urban dystopia where the Roman Empire rules over an increasingly rebellious populous. Some of the Apostles, Jesus’ closest followers, encourage him to take up the political momentum and become King, while Judas, his right hand man, imagines a much more terrible fate. The cast of 48 includes Kyle Schneider (Jesus), Curtis Jackson (Judas), Peter Norton (Pilate), Hannah Heimbuch (Mary Magdalene) and Carolyn Norton (Herod). Susan Cates-Blackmon, who joined Pier One Theatre for the first time this summer as Mary Sunshine in Chicago, takes on the much more sinister role of Caiaphas. You will recognize many seasoned actors as well as local faces brand new to the stage among the Apostles, Priests and Lepers. There are almost 20 peninsula musicians providing musical support for the cast under Mark Robinson's able direction. Lynne Burt and Marie Walker are the guiding hands in costume production and Bobby & Michael McKinney have taken the lead in set construction with valuable assistance from Jim Levine, Judy Wynn, Jill Berryman and Greg Fries. Production Manager Laura Norton and Stage Manager Katelyn Hawkins-Wythe are pulling all the details together. This heartbreaking musical hits the Mariner Theatre stage October 6-7, 12-14 at 7:30 and October 8 and 15 at 3:00. General Admission is $18, Raven's Club $16, Under 21 $15.
