Pier One Theatre presentsThe "Ten-Minute Play Festival" Kick-off!*April 21 at 5:00 PM at Grace Ridge Brewing*870 Smoky Bay Wy. in Homer_________________________________________We are excited about this brand new festival! We hope to stage around 8 new plays with submissions gathered from both experienced and novice playwrights. These plays will be selected by a handful of directors each taking on 1 - 2 plays, with a company of actors each playing several roles.__________________________________________Interested directors and writers are encouraged to attend the kick-off to get your ideas flowing! All are welcome. In order to encourage new works for submission, playwright Kate Rich will be on hand to discuss some basic principles of crafting a ten-minute play. Broomball is similar to hockey, played with a ball on ice but with special shoes instead of skates. All are welcome. No experience or equipment is required. Your first time is free!

Homer Steps Up community walking challenge is a free, four week event running May 1 – 28, 2024. In its 8th year, this popular event is open to anyone on the southern Kenai Peninsula, and regularly attracts hundreds of individuals on dozens of teams to compete for over $3,000 in random drawing and cash prizes. The winning team, based on a cumulative average of their members’ steps gets bragging rights, their name on the traveling trophy and a $500 award for a non-profit of their choice. The challenge is free to register online, and teams of 5-25 members compete by logging their steps using a wearable fitness tracker, smartphone or tracking and entering them manually. New this year is a youth category. Registration and information at www.homerstepsup.com. Homer Steps Up is coordinated by South Peninsula Hospital with support from City of Homer, South Peninsula Behavioral Health, SPARC, and SVT Health & Wellness.

2024 Mary Epperson Folk Music Camp
July 15th – 19th 10am -4pmOpen to ages 8-17
The emphasis of Mary Epperson Music Camp is to have fun playing music!
Each student will select their classes from a list of options. We will do our best to place students in requested classes as well as an ensemble group of 4-7 students.
Each day will consist of a whole group gathering, 3 separate 45-minute class blocks, the ensemble rehearsal, and a group close-out.
On Friday, student ensembles will perform from 3-4 for each other and invited guests!
To register, complete the ticket purchase and fill out the camp registration packet by July 7th.
Join Rich Chiappone and Justin Herrmann for a three-part CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP of flash personal essays about The Animals We Know at Kachemak Bay Campus. In this three-session workshop, we will be refining flash writing techniques about our pets, our chickens, our work animals, the animals we first saw when we were young children, and animals in storybooks we've never seen but love just the same. Join us Friday, April 26, beginning at noon, when Professor Debbie Tobin’s Conservation Ecology undergraduate students will give 10-15 minute oral presentations on their scientific research this semester, and offer posters highlighting field study and survey trips across the Peninsula. This is an opportunity for students to field questions about their work, and for the public to learn about trends in conservation ecology in our local area. This event is free and open to the public and takes place in Kachemak Bay Campus's Pioneer Hall. For more information call (907) 235-1674.
Applications are open for the Ron Senungetuk Summer Youth Arts Scholarship through April 27th!
Homer-area students currently enrolled in grades 6 through 11 are invited to apply for summer arts scholarships. Students must currently attend school in the Homer area and plan to return to school in the Homer area for the 2023-24 school year. Complete applications and supporting materials are due to Homer Council on the Arts no later than 5:00pm on Saturday, April 27th.
